carpe diem

I stood by a lake when I noticed a beautiful flower swaying in the breeze. I wanted to possess it. I was not going to visit the lake the next day or the day after, so I reasoned I might as well as take the flower home and enjoy its short lived beauty rather than let it have a longer life by the lake where it would be worthless to me. I reasoned it would be fair to let the flower sway in the breeze till sunset and then take it home with me.

And as I stood contemplating, someone came by and plucked the flower.

Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.

there are couple of things to be learnt from this story and neither too pleasing.
one is that as human beings we tend to cling on to who we love so much that we end up suffocating them.
second is that one has to do what it takes to get what one wants even if it means walking the unethical path.

There is a duality to the concept of love - you try hard to keep what you love; you express your love by letting go. Contemplation per se is but necessary, only the motive for doing so shoudn't be to enjoy the moment or carpe diem, as you put it, but rather to enjoy life, in all its longetivity.
Like in the Dream Theater song, the thought is to make every moment meaningful, and not to enjoy every moment.
Have to disagree with the second point of your comment though - if getting what one wants requires one to be unethical, one might reconsider how necessary it was in the first place.
Go ahead - saisissez la vie

Never contended that every moment has to be enjoyed.
Thought for the day: Pleasure is overrated.
